Barcelona and Greece 2014: Friday

Image
Our last full day in Greece and we had a slightly late start. We missed breakfast again! We packed up our bags and checked out of the hotel. We started on the way back to Thessaloniki and somehow along the way got stopped by a police car – they just asked to see Rob’s license and then let us carry on. We were driving into a town called Platamonas and noticed a castle on the top of a hill so we decided to stop and take a look around. We climbed up the hill and discovered that the entrance fee to the castle was only €2 each so we went in. The castle was quite interesting and there were some fantastic views. Photo overload coming up......       There was a church within the castle boundary:     We continued on our journey and stopped for lunch at a very new service station which was also very empty! More tolls along the way as we continued to Thessaloniki. The roads got...

Barcelona and Greece 2014: Thursday

After our late night at the wedding we decided not to set an alarm this morning. We ended up waking too late for breakfast. I searched on the internet for local attractions and discovered that there was some kind of ancient theatre in Larissa. So I put the address into the sat nav and we headed into town. A couple of circuits of the town centre and we managed to find a place to park the car – it was a multi-story which had some really narrow gaps! We added the car park to the sat nav so we wouldn’t lose the car. Into a nearby square and we ended up having lunch in a place called Goodys (seems to be a Greek version of McDonalds). After lunch we used the sat nav to locate the ancient theatre – it was actually really close by! They seemed to be doing some kind of renovation so you couldn’t go into the actual area that the theatre was located in (don’t know if you ever could). We took a few photos and then went for a look around.     ...

Barcelona and Greece 2014: Wednesday (A wedding and a Christening)

So this morning we got breakfast at hotel – we weren’t the only people in the restaurant this time...there was one other family! Then as we weren’t sure what the exact plans were for the wedding and other festivities we decided to have a lazy morning in the hotel. Around 1pm we started to get ready – the wedding was at 3 in a nearby town called Farkadona and we weren’t exactly sure we would find the venue easily so we left around 1.30. The sat nav worked perfectly and we arrived far too early....! We checked that we were in the right place and then waited in the car for everyone else to arrive. The wedding was a civil ceremony as Becky isn’t Greek Orthodox and it was much shorter than we had anticipated....! Evidently in Greek weddings the officiate (in this case the Mayor) does most of the talking and the Bride and Groom say very little. After the short ceremony we drove back to George’s mum’s house in Grizano – there was lots of honking along the way which would appear to be traditio...

Barcelona and Greece 2014: Tuesday

Another early start this morning (after getting to bed around 1am). We checked out of the hotel, drove literally up the road to the long stay car park and took the bus to the terminal. We had to check in a bag (with all of our wedding clothes etc) so we got in the ridiculous Ryanair bag drop line. Our bag weighed in at exactly 15kg which was pretty amazing :) We headed through security and then got a sandwich and cookie for breakfast. Then we were off to the gate to board the plane :)  We were quite tired so we slept for most of the 3 hour flight to Thessaloniki!   The flight was on time and we got our bag quickly went through passport control and headed to the car hire desk. We got our bumper car (it was a Toyota Auris which had been well used)!  We headed off towards Larissa – around a 2 hour drive and the roads were pretty quiet once we got out of Thessaloniki. We had to stop every now and then to pay the tolls :( We arrived at the hotel at around 7pm chec...

Barcelona and Greece 2014: Easter Monday

Today was our last day in Barcelona and we were heading back to London at around 9.30 this evening so we had a late start. We slept too late for breakfast but managed to use the computers in the lobby to do online checkin for our Ryanair flight home from Greece. We eventually checked out and left our bags with the hotel. Rob and I went to find snacks while Jennifer and Tom looked at alternative routes home due to our delayed flight which would now arrive after the last train. We went to a little cafe around the corner and had a really unhealthy early lunch. I had some kind of cheese and ham sandwich and Rob had a burger whilst we shared some fries! Jennifer and Tom arrived having found a way to get home so they got some food and we had some cake :) Tom really wanted to go to the Modern Art Museum and as we had made him act as a translator and tour guide we all agreed. However, we essentially agreed (except Tom) that modern art is ridiculous....! Here are some photos to demonstrat...
