Not another holiday... ! A relaxing trip to Barbados Day 4
Thurs
4th Sept
This morning we had breakfast at around 9 then went out for a wander. We knew the garrison was nearby and so headed to look around. Whilst on the way we realised that the house where George Washington ‘lived’ (he stayed on the island for 6 weeks in 1751) was just down the road.
This morning we had breakfast at around 9 then went out for a wander. We knew the garrison was nearby and so headed to look around. Whilst on the way we realised that the house where George Washington ‘lived’ (he stayed on the island for 6 weeks in 1751) was just down the road.
We
headed to the house and paid our entry fee (it was $20 US). We were taken to
watch a movie explaining the background of how George came to the island (his
brother had TB and they were looking for a cure).
Afterward
we were taken across to the house which has been restored and staged with
furniture appropriate to the time period.
Unfortunately
George’s brother later died from TB but George contracted (and survived)
smallpox whilst in Barbados which the Barbadians are quite proud of....!
We
stopped to have a drink in the coffee shop and were amazed at the bargain – we
had 2 bottles of coke which only cost us $3 whereas we found it to cost almost
twice this much everywhere else we went!
Just
before 12 we headed back to watch the Changing of the Sentry ceremony which was
interesting and at times quite amusing.
The
guard duties were carried out as early as the late 1700’s. The instructions
given to the guards at the start of their shifts were highly amusing as it
included a reminder not to lie down or got to sleep whilst on duty. Given that
each shift only lasted an hour this seems an odd reminder to issue....!
We
headed back to the hotel and decided to spend some more time at the beach this
afternoon. Still so lovely and warm in the water and nice and peaceful too.
We
eventually dragged ourselves back to the room to shower and change.
We
continued our afternoon routine of getting drinks and snacks. Today we had the
offer of chicken wings and beef sandwiches – I wasn’t too keen on the beef.
As
if it were needed we then got dinner in the hotel before watching some tv.
